{"id":3091,"date":"2017-08-14T09:24:28","date_gmt":"2017-08-14T13:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/christopherdonahue.com\/?p=3091"},"modified":"2017-08-28T11:00:45","modified_gmt":"2017-08-28T15:00:45","slug":"august-and-the-perseids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christopherdonahue.com\/?p=3091","title":{"rendered":"August and the Perseids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Watching\u00a0meteor showers\u00a0on summer evenings is one\u00a0of \u00a0my fondest memories of childhood.\u00a0 My favorite meteor shower of the year was the Perseid in August.\u00a0 Whether we were at the beach or the mountains,\u00a0 we would search out a dark\u00a0 spot with\u00a0 a broad view of the sky,\u00a0 and\u00a0wait in great anticipation for the first shooting star.\u00a0\u00a0Reclining lawn chairs were essential but laying on the ground with a blanket was the best.\u00a0A personal rule of mine is once\u00a0 you commence meteor watching, you can&#8217;t go in until you see at least shooting star. And that holds for any summer evening. Not just nights with a yearly scheduled meteor shower.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/christopherdonahue.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/cropped-20170813_112512.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3095\" src=\"https:\/\/christopherdonahue.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/cropped-20170813_112512-300x88.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"88\" srcset=\"https:\/\/christopherdonahue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/cropped-20170813_112512-300x88.jpg 300w, https:\/\/christopherdonahue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/cropped-20170813_112512-768x225.jpg 768w, https:\/\/christopherdonahue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/cropped-20170813_112512.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A favorite memory\u00a0 is from my teens.\u00a0I would go up alone, except for our two trustys\u00a0dogs,\u00a0to an athletic field that bordered a large woods. With the field lights off , there was a broad expanse of sky that was perfect for viewing. Laying down on the grass and looing up, I &#8216;d focus my eyes on nothing so I could\u00a0take in the whole expanse of the sky-ready to detect\u00a0 shooting star from anywhere.\u00a0The dogs loved it. Meagan, a border collie, and Molly a Labrador mix would lay down on each side of me and keep watch. No bad guys, bears or coyotes would be sneaking up on us.<\/p>\n<p>Watching meteor shower requires several\u00a0 basic things.\u00a0 Patience,\u00a0 laying on your back ,\u00a0not being in a rush,\u00a0and most importantly clear skies.
