He was catching the late train to work, and\u00a0was in a surprisingly good mood for a rainy day.\u00a0 He attributed the general upbeat feeling to the realization\u00a0winter was really, indisputably over.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> Walking along the sidewalk that parallels\u00a0the tracks, he reflected on how safe and suburban his life had become. The trees were beginning to bud, the houses that abut the tracks looked trim and neat,\u00a0 and robins darted here and there.\u00a0A little ways up he could see his friend Annie waiting for the train. She was holding a white and purple polka-dot umbrella, and wearing a yellow raincoat.\u00a0 She was slowly, strolling through puddles, in a circle,\u00a0wearing her green, knee-high\u00a0rain boots.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">On impulse, and for some reason he really didn&#8217;t understand, he called out:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The droghte of March hath perced to the roote,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And bathed every veyne in swich lic\u00f3ur<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Of which vert\u00fa engendred is the flour;<\/em> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>No sooner had the words left his mouth than he realized he had\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">wanted to show-off his poetry prowess. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">She looked up and replied with gusto: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Whan Zephirus eek with his swete breeth<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Inspired hath in every holt and heeth<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The tendre croppes, and the yonge sonne<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Hath in the Ram his halfe cours y-ronne,<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He was outdone!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> They both laughed, and closer now,\u00a0high-fived.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> \u201cHow&#8217;d you know that\u201d she said?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> &#8220;Once an English major, always an English major.\u00a0Especially in April.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>copyright Christopher Donahue 2017<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Splashing through the puddles in his duck boots, on the way to commuter rail, he felt like a kid\u00a0 braving the April showers.
